Pittsford Farms Dairy

The plan was to try the newly reopened Panther Pit in the Village of Pittsford. Alas, upon arrival the lights were all off and a hastily-taped sign on the back door revealed that the restaurant was not to open until 9 a.m. This was attempt #2, and failure #2, to dine there.

Dave and I went to Pittsford Farms Dairy instead. The refurbished wooden building is largely open, and is reminiscent of a mennonite shop that one might find in rural Yates County. The barn, still standing, towered over me as I parked my car.

There were pastries aplenty inside (although Dave lamented the absence of a savory option), as well as dairy goods, baked goods, Fizz soda, and pizzas. As we ordered, the pastry chef was bringing the fresh-as-can-be items to the display case. We ordered three pastries: a pinwheel (cheese in the center with cinnamon glaze on the “blades”), a raspberry croissant, and a cinnamon roll with white, Cinnabon-looking frosting. Two large coffees (possibly Witches Brew by Finger Lakes) and the total was just over $13.

The coffees were bitter and strong, in a good way. The white-frosted cinnamon roll was passable; the white frosting was a bit too generic for my taste. It could have come from a can. The raspberry danish was Dave’s, although I had a bite. The crust was of desirable texture, and the raspberry filling was sweet and enjoyable.

The pinwheel was the pièce de résistance. The cheese flavoring was both hearty and sweet. The danish itself was the perfect combination of crispy, flakey, fluffy, and doughy. The dollop of sweet cream cheese in the middle was delicious and unique-tasting.

We had a little table by the window, through which we could look out on the sun rising over the large front lawn. The wooden beams and high ceiling belied a cozy and quiet ambience.

With 10 as a must-eat, this restaurant experience rates a 9.

Don’t Miss: The pinwheel danish!

Pro Tip: Bring a solid knife if you’re sharing; the plastic utensils at the restaurant don’t cut it.
