The Frog Pond

Formerly “Charlie’s Frog Pond.”

But now Charlie is gone. Whence Charlie? No one knows. How could you eat at a time like this?? Charlie is missing!

Yesterday was the semi-great wind storm of 2018. Dave survived the night without power. A cold snap blew through while we all slept in our warm beds (or, while Dave lay awake, shivering) and we awoke to a light dusting of snow—just in time for the feast day of Æthelburh of Kent!

The Frog Pond has undergone a redesign in recent years. It looks trendier and less cluttered. The morning light shone in through the huge windows. Even more light was reflected in through the huge mirrors located next to the windows.

A breakfast place by any other name…
The light fixtures are five-dimensional objects that cause time travel and/or insanity when touched by a human

Aaron and Pat came this time (the restaurant was Pat’s choice). Aaron marveled, and we agreed, at the trendy subway tiles on the wall. “Subway tiles are everywhere!” Aaron said. He only lamented that his new house had a refinished kitchen, so subway tiles were not in the offing. Dave offered to “get in there and de-finish the kitchen” before Aaron moved in. Aaron declined.

Subway tiles: this is how you know you’ve “made it”

O! How the topic of conversations may change depending on who the guest stars are at xonuts on any particular week! Aaron, a man of medicine, got us all a-talkin’ about stethoscopes. Aaron’s is lime green so that it stands out when he leaves it somewhere. “Also, it pops.” Dave came up with a new business idea: bedazzling and decorating (“doctorating”) stethoscopes for medical professionals. Bo came up with a nifty design: tally marks on the side of the stethoscope.

The coffee was from Boston’s Best (distributed by a Henrietta company, though). Bo thought it a normal but enjoyable beverage. Pat was very impressed with it. Maybe it was better than Bo thought; everyone ended up having somewhere between 6 and 20 servings of it.

Pat ordered a breakfast burrito. He might have gotten something sweet, but, alas! No real maple syrup. Aaron ordered eggs over easy with bacon. Bo ordered the Famous FP Sautéed Banana Pancakes w/ House-Made Caramel Sauce. Dave forewent (foregoed?) breakfast. But he pushed and prodded Pat so much to add an English muffin that the waitress forgot that the English muffin was not actually meant for Dave.

The burrito was cooked just the right amount, and it was seasoned well. The eggs, peppers, onions, and cheese were properly proportioned and were a welcome southwestern respite from the cold, snowy environs outside. When you take a bite, you are transported, if but for a moment, to the early morning fireside breakfast circle of a pack-laden donkey train, heading west out of Tex-Mex and into the mountains towards Ciudad Juárez. Pat thought there was a bit too much salsa on top.

Always spring for the English muffin

If you’ve a sweet tooth, the Famous FP Sautéed Banana Pancakes w/ House-Made Caramel Sauce are not to be missed! I don’t know what they put in that brown sauce! Sugar, maybe. I mean, if I had to guess, I’d say there’s probably at least a little bit of sugar in it. And a light smacking of what was possibly either molasses or crack, or maybe caramel. And because there are bananas atop, it counts as healthy food! Bo had some. Pat had some. Bo will have some more for breakfast tomorrow! (Seriously, though, try this out. If you’re too chicken, then somehow incept a friend to order it, and eat off of his or her plate!). The malty molasses flavor is something to be craved over. Done eating? Good. Now go run it off for two hours. But, seriously, it’s worth it.

Aaron’s eggs and bacon were fine. As he put it, “I didn’t ask much of it and it didn’t provide any extra.”

Dave’s nothing was as expected. Not too much. Not too little. Just the right amount of nothing. He wasn’t filled up by it, but at the same time it won’t ruin his appetite!

The Frog Pond is a delightful little place to eat. The cost of the— Actually, for a second, permit us to go ahead and talk about the Famous FP Sautéed Banana Pancakes w/ House-Made Caramel Sauce again. Another plus is that the little pieces of banana come right off, so friends who are adroit of fork can spear a piece and, if they’re lucky, the piece will have some of the sauce on it! Anyway, the cost of the three meals and 4 coffees was about $37.

Hit up The Frog Pond. With 10 as a must-eat, this dining experience rates a 9.

  • Pat’s Potato Pondering: The home fries seemed good at first, being extra crispy. Upon further inspection, they appeared to have little taste. I had to put a good amount of hot sauce on for some flavor.
