Hart’s Local Grocers

“It’s always a beautiful day with sriracha in your face and an apple in your craw.”

It’s an expression!!

We came to Hart’s on a gray morning (elsewhere in the world, it would have been a grey morning).

The shop itself opens at 7 a.m., but we arrived at 8 in order to partake of the cafe.

The place still wasn’t quite ready for us, although we saw some promising signs.

Bo ordered a cafe mocha and a signature breakfast sandwich. Dave ordered a covfefe and a . . . signature breakfast sandwich.

Oh and, and!! We ordered two (2) donuts, for the time that the person actually brought the donuts out. (We were told that, because the donuts are delivered daily, sometimes they’re not quite ready for purchase by 8:00:00 a.m.).

We hired a professional photographer to do these focus-in, focus-out cross-section photos.

The breakfast sandwiches were rather tasty – the crisp and slightly powdery bun provided some mental support; you just know that this sandwich isn’t falling apart unless you mess something up terribly. But the real star of the sandwich is the sriracha mayonnaise. “Oh, what’s this like pinkish whitish sauce?” You’ll ask across the heavy wooden table. Brah, that’s the sriracha mayonnaise, your anarcho-primitivist imaginary friend will answer. It’s spicy but basic. It permeates the sandwich in every bite. In short, it makes the sandwich.

Your nose will be a tad runny when you finish.

An apple donut and a pumpkin donut. Mr. Autumn Man would be proud.

The donuts were, as expected, supremely tasty. The apple donut didn’t taste a ton like apple, unless you count the tiny green spot that was sour apple flavored. The pumpkin spice donut was, secretly, a time machine. It transports you back to when you’re 8 years old, and you’re taking one of those haunted hayrides, but at the halfway point, there’s this little like fruit stand in the middle of the dark cornfield, with two or three ladies dressed as witches handing out food to everyone and saying, “Spider cider? Deadly donuts? Spider cider? Deadly donuts?” Little child you savors the crumble of the dough and the way that the spice settles on your tongue, the chill autumn air flowing freely through your nostrils.

The donut was permeated with the spice; the little black spice flakes in the dough actually served a purpose with this Boxcar creation! The sweet pumpkin flavoring came mostly through the frosting which, like everything Boxcar does, was intense without being too overwhelming.

Logistically, you order at the counter and pay at the counter, then you give a name, then you find a table, then you wait for them to call your name. Pay attention! Sometimes it can be hard to hear.

At over $20, the breakfast was a bit pricey, but the ingredients are fresh and you leave with the satisfaction of knowing that you helped out a neat-o local business.

With whatever, this is a 9.

Pro Tip: To pay with credit, use the middle, yellow “clear” button.

Don’t Miss: The signature breakfast sandwich w/ sriracha mayo. (duh).
