Ridge Donuts

Just north of Rochester General Hospital, in the Town of Irondequoit, you’ll find a little brick building, with pink filling on the inside. Depending on to whom you talk, this building (actually, the business/foodery inside the building) is the best donut shop in Rochester. The best, Jerry. The regulars lined the counter. A Seabreeze firefighter entered. He and I gave one another the slightest of nods.

Xonuts this week was a party. Pat was already inside waiting for us. We strolled along the counter and I took note of the donut of the day—it was handwritten on a piece of paper such that the store employee had to lift the paper up and eyeball it under different lighting in order to see: chocolate chip apple fritter.

“Mr. Ridge” comes to life once a year to murder a bagel-eater.

I ordered a raspberry tail light to complement the chocolate chip apple fritter. (Headlights are apparently these doughey-chocolate covered things with white whipped cream atop). Ellie ordered a breakfast sandwich. Dave ordered one of their famous “Hand Cut Glazed,” which he claimed “put them on the map!” Pat ordered a chocolate cake/chocolate glaze and a sour cream. There were these little sour cream ravioli bites: four of those for the table, ma’am. And coffee for all.

The raspberry tail light. There are lemon-flavored ones too, because, apparently, yellow tail lights are a thing?

First, the special. It was good, but not the best I’ve ever enjoyed at at Ridge. The chocolate chips were plentiful, but there was not enough flavor to go around (i.e., the apple was underwhelming). In future, or if I had the chance to time-travel, I will / would have gone for the cherry cake (see above, from a previous trip). Square-shaped donuts also fascinate me. Perhaps… someday… I will eat one. The tail light was, as always, a reliable favorite. The raspberry jiggled in anticipation as I raised the treat towards my mouth. Then the bite in: now I know how non-Newton felt. The laws of viscosity were nowhere to be found.

Today’s special: the chocolate chip apple fritter.
The tray buckles under the weight of sweetness.

The breakfast sandwich: buttery, flaky goodness meets a Kraft single. Take that for what you will.

When Pat’s back was turned, I snuck (sneaked?) a bite of his chocolate-chocolate. It, too, was reliably good.

Conclusion: everything was reliably good. The tail light stood out. Time Safari, Inc., will assist me in replacing my choco-fritter choice with a cherry cake choice.

Some say that Ridge Donuts is the best donut shop in the area. Some would call them heroes. Not me, however. Their donuts are rather good, though. With 10 as a must-eat, this eating experience rates a 9.

Don’t Miss: The cherry cake. Also the tail lights (either flavor).

Pro tip: Credit card transactions under $5.99 get a 50-cent surcharge attached.
