Rohrbach’s Outdoor Beer and Donut Pairing

Cobb’s Hill Park

Those of you who follow our Instagram stories know that we were able to obtain last minute entrance into the outdoor beer and donut pairing at Cobbs Hill Park!

There were five doughnuteries present, each with one delicious option, and each paired with a shot glass full of an complementarily-flavored Rohrbach’s beer.

The boxcar plinko game
The key lime was extra sweet, but not overpowering. This was a great donut with which to start. The key lime says, “Hey buddy, here’s some key lime in your face.” The light and fluffy donut body says, “My friend, I do hope you enjoy, and don’t you like how I’m not so thick that you’re not now left craving for more?” Railroad Street IPA – always a classic.
The Hegedorns apple fritter was so dense that I was worried it would soon collapse on itself and form a singularity. Good thing the bakers at Hegedorns double-checked their math so as to remain below the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff limit. The apple fritter is a classic; nothing too unique and nothing to have nightmares about. Vanilla Porter – always a classic.
Read that paragraph again (yes, in case you’re skimming, the flavor descriptions and stuff are written in text that is actually part of the photograph. It’s an Instagram thing. No, that’s not the same as Facebook. No, it’s not a series of tubes) – cranberry and lemon and blueberry granola. Lots of things. Too many. Too many things. I selected a donut that had the granola nearly covering a hole. At that point, you might ask, is it still a donut? Or, like the Ship of Theseus, has an incremental change in the body over time transformed it into something delicious? Ridge Donut’s offering was thick and sticky and gooey and crumbly, but was perhaps a bit much (not according to democracy, though; this donut won the taste test!). Blueberry Ale – always potable.

Schutts has been around since 1918. I think it was founded by Private Doughboy Erine Coolidge on the day he set sail for Paris. The glazed fry cake was up to snuff for those who enjoy high-quality and classy dough, and not-too-overdone glaze. In short, it’s a well-balanced item that you hold in your hand for a moment before putting it in your mouth, chewing it, and begin to digest it (hopefully). Highland Lager – always a classic.
The maple glazed was vegan and tiny – great for snacking without filling up! But the real winner here was the vegan chicken skin. It’s on rice paper. It tasted like childhood. I couldn’t quite place it. Something about warm weather, and grilling perhaps, and tons of spices on a chicken patty of some kind. It tasted like childhood, like the past. That was all long ago, in some brief, lost spring, in a place that is no more. Griddlecakes – always cray. Worth a tray. (a try).
